Our terroir

Île de Ré wines, Cognacs and Pineau des Charentes

Between land & sea | Île de Ré terroir

A temperate climate with plenty of sunshine

Île de Ré was formed from sedimentary deposits that created limestone and sandy soils. Its climate is temperate, with abundant sunshine and relatively low rainfall.
The winds can be strong, but they are warm, and temperatures are generally mild, notably thanks to the influence of the Gulf Stream.

Ideal for growing vines

This distinctive combination of natural factors favours winegrowing and gives us a milder climate than the mainland, helping protect our vines from frost.
We can therefore grow grapes and make wines with characteristic aromas and flavours.

We love and nurture our wines.

We constantly work to improve their quality by refining our growing and production methods.
With this in mind, we commissioned a terroir study from 2001 to 2005 to determine the composition of our soils.
This study enabled us to map soils accurately across every vineyard plot and match grape varieties to each soil type.
Some varieties require greater water stress than others and are therefore better suited to dry, well-drained soils such as sandy soils.
This careful matching helps ensure better grape ripening and optimise quality.

    Our grape varieties
  • The grape varieties currently used to make our wines are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Négrette and Cabernet Franc for reds, and Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Colombard for whites..
  • For our Cognacs and Pineau des Charentes, we mainly use Ugni Blanc (with a little Colombard)..
